Connecting to a Printer on a Network
Begin by opening the Control Panel from the Start Menu. Double click on 'Printers and Faxes,' and in the window that appears, click on 'Add a printer' under the 'Printer Tasks' heading of the left-hand pane. This opens the Add Printer Wizard. Click 'Next' to advance with your setup, and the Local or Network Printer Window appears.
Make sure the bubble next to the network printer option is filled (and not the one next to the local printer), as it is in the above image, and click 'Next' to continue. In the Specify a Printer Window that now appears, choose the second option, which enables you to connect to a specific printer.
In the 'Name' field, type the printer name using the following format: \\winprint.cse.wustl.edu\printer_name .
(A list of available printers on the CSE network can be found at the bottom of this page.) For example, if we wanted to connect to the color printer in Bryan 509, would input: \\winprint.cse.wustl.edu\bry509color .
Click 'Next' to proceed. The next window asks you if you would like to make the printer you just named your default printer. Make the appropriate selection, and click 'Next' to continue on with the wizard. The final screen of the wizard appears, and once you click 'Finish,' your computer should be successfully connected to the printer you specified.
Upon completion of this setup, you are connected to a shared printer on the network, and you are able to use the printer as if it were attached to your computer.
Adjusting Default Printing Properties
The printing properties can be adjusted at any time by selecting the printer you're using from the Control Panel. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu, select 'Printers and Faxes,' and double click on the printer. In the new window that appears, select 'Printer' from the upper left-hand corner, and then click on 'Printing Preferences' from the drop down menu. From there you are able to set your preferences, including those regarding duplexing (available for chocolate and found under the 'Advanced' options). Click 'Apply' and then 'OK' to set your preferences.
