CentOS is a community compiled version of RedHat Enterprise Server.

RedHat releases the sources of their Enterprise product via the GPL to the community at large, and the CentOS project recompiles these RPMs, and packages them just like RedHat would.

Standardizing on the true RedHat Enterprise would be possible and desirable, but there isn't enough support in the University as a whole to make a site license for it workable.
